To be fair for one dead pixel im surprised they didnt kick up more of a fuss on the returns. I remember when the first PSP came out places stopped allowing returns for a good while unless you had something like 3 or more stuck or dead pixels. Open the webbrowser on your psp and search for 'Pixel fixer' or type this in and leave it running on your psp for 15-20 minutes while sometimes pressing gently onto the screen around the pixels (if possible) and it should fix it.

The first thing you do when you purchase a new smartphone, laptop or LCD TV monitor is to check for dead pixels. More often than not, if you purchase a branded product such as Dell Monitor or Asus Laptop or Samsung Smartphone, you are guaranteed a 1 for 1 exchange during the warranty period. This cannot be said if the said item is of generic brand. Without further ado, here are 6 free tools to detect and fix dead or stuck pixels.

Stuck (Fixable) vs. Dead Pixels ( Not Fixable)

A stuck pixel is a bright dot of colour that fails to update when neighbouring pixels change. Stuck pixels are most noticeable when the rest of the screen is black. Stuck pixels are different from dead pixels. A stuck pixel is a single color – red, green, or blue – all of the time. A dead pixel is black instead. While it’s often possible to “unstick” a stuck pixel, it’s much less likely that a dead pixel will be fixed. While a dead pixel may simply be stuck at black, it’s possible that the pixel isn’t receiving power at all. A faulty pixel displaying the color white all of the time is known as a “hot pixel.”

DeadPix is an application that can help you fix pixels that are stuck on your screen. You can download the installer or download the portable version below. It’s also completely free! It can fix stuck pixels by rapidly cycling the color value of the stuck pixel. Please note that this tool does not provide a 100% success rate.

Try to fix dead, stuck or hot pixels by yourself, before running back to the store! PixelHealer uses the already tested concept that flashing RGB colors over a dead or stuck pixel will revive it. PixelHealer can help you try to fix dead pixels by yourself, before running back to the store! You can use it to fix dead, stuck or hot pixels on LCD or TFT screens, on desktop monitors, laptops or tablets.

First of all, use our own free InjuredPixels portable app to check your screen or tablet for dead, stuck or hot pixels. Then, download and run PixelHealer without installation, cover the dead pixel with the colored repair window, and click Start Flashing. So let the repair window run for a while, then check to see if the dead pixel has been fixed or revived. And repeat the process if necessary.

This is a simple test designed to make it easier to detect LCD “dead pixels” (pixels that are either stuck-ON or stuck-OFF) by displaying a series of solid background color pages for contrast.

The way the app works is quite simple: it basically fills the screen with the color selected by you, thus making any dead or stuck pixel clearly visible. It is recommended to experiment with several colors, as you might not notice the broken pixels from the first attempt – you can go with one of the default colors (black, white, red, green or blue) or you can specify a custom one. You can also set Dead Pixel Buddy to automatically switch between colors as often as you like – just modify the Time Cycle value and you are set.

Have dead or stuck pixels on your laptop screen or retina display? Keep replaying this video until the dead pixel or stuck pixel has been repaired/unstuck. This video fixed the stuck pixels on my Macbook Pro’s Retina display (UHD 4K), Though be warned it can take hours depending on the pixel.

If this method doesn’t work for you, Google the pen tip pixel method or contact the manufacturer of your display. This video should also work on smart phones, iPhone, iPad and tablets! Siezure warning – Do not watch the screen! Turn the screen away from you if possible and allow the video to run to the end, repeat the video if necessary.

So, I broke down and bought a Playstation Portable (PSP) this weekend. Lo and behold, it has a single stuck pixel. I didn't even notice it until I fired up a game for the first time, but there it is... A little, constantly red, annoying little bastard!

I really hate confronting retailers with returns, especially when its a single pixel that I'm complaining about. This wouldn't be the first time that I've done it though. But before I packed the PSP back up and headed for Best Buy, I figured I'd check online to see if this was a common problem. Unfortunately, it is a very common problem with PSPs and many people that have exchanged a PSP due to dead pixels, reports that their new unit has even more. So I count myself somewhat lucky to only have a single stuck pixel.

Luckily, I happened upon a post that talked about a little movie that that was originally distributed to help fix dead/stuck pixels on LCD TVs and monitors. The video is a series of screen that flash repeatedly in each of the colors that a pixel supports (Red, Greed, Blue.) The idea being that you can coax a stubbornly stuck pixel into working (or raise a dead pixel from the grave) by constantly forcing all of the pixels of the display to cycle through all of their possible states. (great idea!)

(Note: A stuck pixel is a pixel that only displays a single color (red in my case) and doesn't cycle to any other color. A dead pixel is a pixel that is black and never displays a color. The success rate seems to be higher with stuck pixels over dead ones.)

I downloaded the PSP version and have it currently running on my PSP, but some people have reported success in minutes, while other have had to let the video run for several hours. The consensus seems to be, that if the video doesn't fix your stuck/dead pixel in 24 hours, you might just be stuck with it.

I post this here, because I know of a lot of people that have stuck/dead pixels on their LCD monitors or laptop screen, and I figure that this might be worth a try on those as well. I'll post a follow up and let everyone know how it worked on my PSP. =)

Well, I ran the video for probably 7 hours on my new PSP with no luck. The red little bastard pixel remained. Luckily, Best Buy was great at letting me return my unit for a new one. And I haven't been able to find any other stuck/dead pixels.
